Product Manager Negotiation Tactics That Work

Frame it around the scope you're stepping into

PMs with a clear case for their scope — "I'm inheriting a team of 4 engineers and a product that drives 40% of revenue" — have a much stronger basis for a counter than those making a generic market appeal. Tie your ask to the business impact you're expected to deliver.

Push hard on the equity component

At growth-stage companies, equity can eclipse your base salary in value. Request the strike price, current 409A, preferred shares outstanding, and last round valuation. These numbers let you calculate a realistic equity value — most candidates never ask.

Use competing PM offers from similar stages

A Series B fintech offer is more comparable to another Series B fintech than to a FAANG offer. Adjust your market comps to company stage, not just title — it's a stronger argument and shows commercial awareness.

I'm really excited about this role — the scope aligns exactly with what I've been building toward. After thinking through the full package, I'd love to get the base to $[X]. Given the product surface and team size I'd be responsible for, I believe it reflects the market for this scope. Happy to talk through how we structure it.
