Cover Letter for DevOps Engineers

DevOps cover letters live or die on operational credibility. Hiring managers want to know you've run infrastructure under real pressure — not that you've studied it in a homelab.

DevOps Engineer Cover Letter Tips

Open with a scale or reliability achievement

"I've been the primary infrastructure owner for a platform processing 500k API calls per day with a 99.97% SLA" establishes credibility immediately. If you have numbers like these, put them in the first two sentences.

Name their specific stack

DevOps stacks are specific: AWS vs. GCP, EKS vs. bare Kubernetes, Terraform vs. Pulumi, GitHub Actions vs. Jenkins. Match your experience to their stack explicitly. Hiring managers in ops roles want someone who can contribute on day one.

Show you're developer-experience focused, not just ops focused

Modern DevOps is about making developers faster. If you've improved deployment frequency, reduced CI times, or built internal tooling that developers love, say so. That's what separates platform engineers from traditional ops.

Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Include uptime or cost reduction numbers
  • Name certifications if you hold them
  • Mention the specific cloud provider they use
  • Keep it under 200 words

Don't

  • Don't list every tool you've touched — pick the ones they use
  • Don't use the phrase "passionate about automation"
  • Don't skip on-call experience if you have it
  • Don't ignore the developer experience angle
