Backend Developer Cover Letter Tips
Open with a system you've owned at scale
"I maintain the authentication service for a platform with 2M monthly active users" establishes credibility in one sentence. Scale matters in backend conversations — if you have it, lead with it.
Show alignment with their tech stack specifically
Backend stacks are highly specific: which language, which ORM, which message broker, which cloud provider. Mention the ones you have in common with them and your depth in each. "I've been using Go + PostgreSQL + Kafka in production for 3 years" is worth ten bullet points.
Mention reliability or performance outcomes
Response time improvements, uptime percentages, latency reductions — these resonate with backend hiring managers because they're what gets paged at 2am. If you improved any of these, say so with a number.
Dos and Don'ts
Do
- ✓Name their stack explicitly
- ✓Include a scale or reliability metric
- ✓Keep it under 220 words
- ✓Mention any on-call or incident response experience
Don't
- ✗Don't say you're "passionate about scalable systems"
- ✗Don't list every language you've touched
- ✗Don't ignore DevOps/cloud if they use it
- ✗Don't forget to mention API design if the role involves it
